As we all know, parenthood carries a 24-hour-a-day, 7-days-a-week responsibility clause. There are no designated lunch breaks, sick days, or vacation time.

With that in mind, self-care can sound a bit selfish or indulgent. It can easily become a low priority while we are busy changing diapers, making meals, cleaning up messes, arranging playdates, juggling our careers, etc.

But if we look more deeply, self-care of Mama Bear is critical for the wellness of our family, our household, and especially our kids.

"Rest and Self-Care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to
serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel". (Eleanor Brown)

Mother's Day is the perfect time to re-examine how we are taking care of our needs, make self-care a priority again, and feel good about it.

While most of us love flowers, chocolates, and/or breakfast in bed, there are some priceless gifts that will make our day even more memorable. This is not a Mother's Day Gift Guide, but rather a Mother's Day Self-Gift Guide.

  1. The Gift of Sleep ~ Sleep in, or make it an early night. Or both!
  2. The Gift of Solo Time ~ Go enjoy a cup of organic, fair trade on a "me date" at your favorite coffee shop.
  3. The Gift of Relaxation ~ Treat yourself to an at-home spa day.
  4. The Gift of Saying "No" ~ List your priorities in order. Eliminate things that matter much less.
  5. The Gift of Learning ~ Take a local fitness, craft, or art class.
  6. The Gift of Indulgence ~ Enjoy your favorite dessert, slowly sip a glass of wine, or watch a marathon of your favorite TV show.
  7. The Gift of Delegating ~ Assign household tasks to other family members.
  8. The Gift of Sense of Direction ~ Set a new goal for yourself.
  9. The Gift of Inspiration ~ Get into bed in your PJ's and have a good read!
  10. The Gift of Disconnecting ~ Unplug from social media and all unnecessary use of devices for a day.

Self-care requires focus, balance, planning, and action. And, it is essential. It helps us become the best version of ourselves, and sets a valuable example for the ones we love the very most.
